Red Football Kits-Do They Encourage Determination?

Football Kits-Ever Think If The Colour Worn Affects A Team’s Performance?

Ever thought about the colour of football kits and if they play in significant place in the team’s performance?  Yes it is true that the performance relies on many other critical factors, yet it may surprise you to know that a study has revealed the red kits can have a positive effect.  This study was featued in the Sunday Times newspaper in 2008.

Is it a coincidence that top teams Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all wear red?  Durham University Professor Robert Barton says that there are a few possible explanations.  It would be that supporters have been more attracted towards teams who were red and therefore having a good fan base builds these teams’ performances.

However he also suggests that teams who wear red get a good psychological boost from wearing it and their opposition can get a negative psychological effect.

For those who are into the meaning of colours, red is believed to stimulate passions, incite energy, and encourage feelings of determination and courage.  The Eastern system of chakras, which are energy wheels that we apparently have in our bodies, has red as the colour for the base chakra.  This chakra is all about survival.

So in summary it can help people to be more assertive, courageous, determined, have more energy and feel more active, and seen like this it certainly seems a good choice for football kits.

Sir Alex Ferguson agrees that kit colour is significant.  He remembers back in 1996 when Manchester played Southampton in a grey away kit.  They lost 3-0.  He reckons that the players couldn’t pick each other out, but grey is not an especially positive colour, so maybe this had an impact also.  The kit was given the sack after this!

Throughout elements of nature the colour is associated with male aggression and display.  In a way it seems like wearing red football kits could make a team feel tougher on a subconscious level.
