Sneijder amongst Inter absentees in Moscow

Playmaker Wesley Sneijder was amongst the absentees as Inter Milan named their squad for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with CSKA in Moscow.

Brazil full-back Maicon and Serbia captain and midfielder Dejan Stankovic will also miss the crunch encounter.

Having lost their opening match at home to group outsiders Trabzonspor, Inter are desperate to take something from the game.

Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi will make the trip but such are Inter’s injury problems that coach Claudio Ranieri has called up youth team midfielders Lorenzo Crisetig and Andrea Romano into his 21-man squad.

He also has to do without forward Diego Forlan, who is cup-tied having represented Atletico Madrid in the Europa League qualifying rounds.

Forlan set for Inter challengeForlan set for Inter challenge

Diego Forlan has bid Atletico Madrid a fond farewell as he prepares to embark on a new challenge at Inter Milan.

The Uruguay striker was set to travel to Milan on Monday afternoon and put pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Serie A giants.

“It’s difficult to say goodbye after four years here and three years at Villarreal,” said Forlan in a press conference in Madrid. “I am sad to leave Spain. I feel a great affection to the people and I will never forget it.”

He added: “The experience at Atletico has been incredible. We have won many titles but not only that, I’ve met great people at the club. I leave as an Atletico fan. These people will remain in my heart.”

The 32-year-old joined Atletico in 2007 from Villarreal and helped the Madrid outfit clinch the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup last year. But the former Manchester United man now cannot wait to experience Serie A football.

“I see this new project as another great challenge,” he said.

“I leave a great club but I arrive to another top club.

“I know the Serie A as I have watched it on TV and I am happy to be able to play having already competed in La Liga and the Premier League.

“I loved their (Inter’s) project and their willingness to sign me.”

Inter were keen to lure Forlan to the San Siro to strengthen their attacking line following the sale of Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o to Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala last week.

Moratti rules out Sneijder saleMoratti rules out Sneijder sale

Wesley Sneijder will remain at Inter Milan this summer according to president Massimo Moratti, who has described the Dutch playmaker as “untouchable”.

Sneijder has been linked with a move to Manchester United and revealed at the weekend he could be sold for the right price after “unofficial talks” had begun. Moratti has, however, denied those comments, saying there has never been any such negotiations and that Inter are not interested in selling one of their key men.

“There has never been any kind of talks about Wes,” Moratti told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Moratti revealed his resolve to keep Sneijder has been strengthened further by the imminent departure of star striker Samuel Eto’o, who is set to join big-spending Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

“It doesn’t matter whether Eto’o stays put or leaves the club,” he added.

“Sneijder was untouchable before the situation with Eto’o and he has become even more so now Eto’o could leave. Sneijder is going nowhere.”

Moratti also confirmed speculation regarding the club’s interest in Manchester City’s wantaway striker Carlos Tevez, but believes any deal is unlikely as he instead looks at other options to fill Eto’o's departure.

“The names that have been mentioned are correct,” he added.

“We have been following Tevez, (Ezequiel) Lavezzi and (Diego) Forlan. It will be difficult to sort an agreement for the City striker but the others we are considering.

“We’ll see.”

Rossi invites Inter bid

Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi has invited Inter Milan boss Rafael Benitez to make a bid for him, admitting that he “could never say no to a side like Inter”.

Giuseppe Rossi, when asked about joining Inter Milan he said “I have read in the papers that Inter have asked about me, but I have not heard anything official,” in a interview by Il Corriere dello Sport.

“Of course, if I received an interesting proposal from a great team then I would think about it, and then we would see what happens.

“I won’t hide that the voices are pleasing. Being linked with the best team in Europe and Champions League winners is nice.

“Milan? I was a Milanista when I was young, but when you become a professional then you only think about doing well for the team you play for.”

In an another interview by Corriere dello Sport, Rossi also claimed that “I am very happy at Villarreal and owe them a great deal,”. “However, I could never say no to a side like Inter. My phone is always on.

“It’s an honour to be linked with the champions of Italy and Europe, but for the moment there has been no official contact. I would only leave Villarreal if the call came from a big club. I am ready for a team like Inter.”

Giuseppe Rossi, who has been a part of the Villarreal squad since moving in from Manchester United in 2007, started off his career in Italy with Parma and returned to play for the Serie A side on loan before transferring to Villarreal.

As Mario Balotelli has been reported that he might be leaving Inter Milan and setting off for pastures new, Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi has emerged as a possible replacement. Continue reading
