Kean: Business as usual for Rovers

Rovers are 19th in the table after losing five of their opening seven Barclays Premier League fixtures this season, piling the pressure on manager Kean.

The club only narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight last term under the Scot, who was installed as Sam Allardyce’s successor by Indian poultry firm Venky’s shortly after they completed their takeover at Ewood Park in November 2010.

During and after Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat to Manchester City, a section of Blackburn fans loudly voiced their dissatisfaction.

Rovers are on tour in India during the international break and co-owner Venkatesh Rao has said that a “very big discussion” is going to take place about the club’s situation, with a “plan of action” formulated.

As far as Kean is concerned, though, it will be nothing out of the ordinary.

“We always have a sit down and a talk,” Kean said. “I think people will say that I have been summoned or called, but I have heard that probably on my last six or seven trips.

“I come here once a month to sit down with the family and talk about all aspects of the club and the games, the development of the younger players, the integration of the new players, what we want to do in the next transfer window, the funding of that.

“We speak about all aspects and what I will be doing is exactly what I normally do, going through all that.”

Kean stated his “100 per cent” commitment to fighting on as Blackburn manager after the match against City and remains confident in his ability to get Rovers back on track despite the criticism of some fans.

“It can get to you but not for one minute (do I doubt myself),” he said.

“When I go on the training ground and see the lads responding, and get the backing of the family and the majority of the fans, then I am happy in my work and as long as I feel that, we will turn things around.

“I have no doubt about that.”

Bolton Wanderers 1-5 Chelsea

Daniel Sturridge netted twice against his old club who suffered a sixth successive defeat in the Barclays Premier League despite a consolation goal from Dedryck Boyata.

Bolton had been beaten on Chelsea’s eight previous visits and within two minutes they were behind.

Juan Mata swung in a corner and Sturridge rose unmarked to convert, the forward choosing not to celebrate the goal against his former club.

After 15 minutes it was 2-0 as Sturridge squared in the box for Lampard, who had the space to slot the ball past Adam Bogdan.

Chelsea then scored twice in as many minutes as stand-in keeper Bogdan let Sturridge’s 18-yard shot loop in off him on 25 minutes.

The Hungarian then parried David Luiz’s strike straight at the feet of Lampard, who tucked it away gleefully

Wanderers pulled a goal back a minute after the break when Boyata nodded in Martin Petrov’s free-kick and Lampard completed his hat-trick on 59 minutes, sweeping in from Didier Drogba’s pass.

Welbeck keen to prove his worth

The 20-year-old was picked by Ferguson to lead the line against Basle in the Champions League – ahead of the club’s record signing Dimitar Berbatov – and responded with two goals in an 80-second spell.

Welbeck’s display was one of the few positives for Ferguson in the 3-3 draw which highlighted some defensive frailty for United, and the England striker is desperate for more opportunities to prove his worth.

Welbeck said: “The manager shows time and time again he will give local players a chance and it is then up to the individual to take it. I hope I can.

“I don’t know whether it is harder for local boys up front to make it. I can only look at myself and take my opportunities when they come.

“To score those two goals was a bittersweet moment for me. To get two Champions league goals, I am buzzing about that, but we didn’t get the win we should have done.

“I hope I have done enough to play against Norwich. We have some great strikers at the club and whoever is in there will give it 100 per cent. I just hope I get my chances.”

Welbeck had a successful season on loan at Sunderland last year but believes he is still developing.

“I think I’m a better person than a year ago because I went to Sunderland and got more minutes in the Premier League,” he added.

“It was really good for my career and I’m just really pleased at the moment. Naturally I’ve been growing, I’m still only 20 years old, I’m 21 in a couple of months so I’m just naturally developing into a man.”

Barclays name photographic awards winners

Barclays announced that Martin Rickett has won the Barclays Photographer of the Season award, honouring the best Barclays Premier League photographer during the 2010/11 season.

Press Association photographer Rickett submitted a portfolio of five images from the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League season, including an iconic shot of Wayne Rooney’s stunning overhead kick in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford last February.

He also included memorable images of Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez taking on five Everton players with the ball at his feet, and Sir Alex Ferguson and his staff celebrating against Chelsea, a victory which all but sealed the Barclays Premier League title for Manchester United.

Rickett said: “It’s a huge honour to be chosen as the Barclays Photographer of the Season. I covered some great moments in the Barclays Premier League last season and hoped that my portfolio would reflect that, so it’s amazing to win. I’m very grateful for the continued support that Barclays shows for sports photographers like myself.”

Meanwhile, Richard Pelham of The Sun has claimed the Barclays Shot of the Season award, honouring the best individual photograph taken during the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League season.

Pelham’s dramatic photograph shows Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes desperately scrambling back to try to stop a Frank Lampard shot from crossing the line at Stamford Bridge in April. The goal was given as Chelsea won the match 2-1.

Pelham said: “I’m delighted to win the Barclays Shot of the Season award – it’s regarded as one of the most important awards you can win as a football photographer. Time seemed to slow down as Gomes lunged back to stop the ball from crossing the line, and I was really pleased to get a shot which captured the moment so well.”

The judging panel included Sky Sports football commentator Martin Tyler, last year’s Barclays Photographer of the Season winner Bradley Ormesher and chairman of the Football Writers’ Association, Steve Bates.

As Barclays Photographer of the Season, Martin Rickett receives an official Barclays award and £10,000 worth of photographic equipment, whilst Pelham receives £5,000 of photographic equipment in addition to his Barclays Shot of the Season award.

Dalglish: Bellamy has the hunger

Bellamy scored in the 2-1 Carling Cup win against Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday after being given his first start since re-signing for the Anfield club last month.

Despite the 32-year-old’s reputation for having trouble follow him wherever he goes, Dalglish has had nothing but praise for a player they picked up for nothing after Manchester City agreed to cancel the final year of his contract.

Bellamy left Anfield in 2007 after just one season but Dalglish believes he has returned with a determination to do better than his first brief spell, in which he scored nine goals.

“We knew what we were getting when Craig came in. We’ve said many times before what Craig brings to this football club,” said the Scot.

“He had a year out last year when he played at Cardiff rather than in the Barclays Premier League and I think we are getting the benefit of that because he has got a hunger to come in and impress.

“He’s got a desire because maybe he went away with a bit of unfinished business the last time he left here.

“So he’s got a desire to relight that and we’ll get the benefit of it.

“He’ll make a contribution to the football club over the length of his contract and hopefully Wednesday night was just the beginning for him.

“He loves playing football and is really enthusiastic. He wants to do well and we’ll help him to do that all that we can.”
